What is National Heritage – Museums Action Movement?
National Heritage.....
- is the only national body representing the interests of visitors to art galleries and museums
- monitors the performance of museums and galleries, their achievements and shortcomings
- carries out research
- lobbies and campaigns for the interests of museums and galleries – with more and more museums and galleries facing cut-backs and closure, the need for an independent voice is increasingly important
- publishes the lively and often controversial Museum News
- created the first Museum of the Year award scheme in 1973
- is a trustee of its successor the Gulbenkian Museum Prize
Why does National Heritage – Museums Action Movement exist?
More people visit museums and galleries than go to football matches. National Heritage is the only independent body representing these millions of visitors.
When National Heritage started in 1971, it caused a renaissance in the museum & gallery world. Before the 1970s displays were often behind glass cases, inaccessible to children, to use that ghastly phrase, they were not user-friendly. National Heritage listened to visitors and encouraged and supported museums and galleries in their goal to modernize.
Nowadays we continue to support museums and galleries, criticizing when appropriately. We continue to carry out research, encourage museums and galleries to cater for their visitors and we support the Gulbenkian Museum Prize, the largest arts prize in the UK.
How your legacy will help
Your contribution will enable us to continue working for visitors and museums and galleries.
We rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters, receiving no financial support from government or lottery sources. This means that every contribution we receive is especially treasured.
